🌙 Moonlight Adventures

Create your Mobian. Build your story. Explore the Village.

What Moonlight Adventures Is

Moonlight Adventures is a player‑first, emotionally safe storytelling mode. Players create Mobian characters, explore symbolic scenes, face emotional beats, and end each episode with a goodbye ritual.

What's on the Page?

Create your Mobian : Allow your group to create your mobian character. From family name, name, abilities, and more. It is here you will be able to create custom characters for your party and raids. Can't make one? Use the cannon characters if you wish based on the stories.

Cannon Characters: Learn about the characters of the stories and their stats to use for the games you run. Each character has a set of abilities, and learn about their roles in the story. Note that some characters are what you call a "core" character and have special mechanics due to their roles in the stories. The major core cannon character is Francis Thomson.

Rules and Systems: Ready to take the characters to your table? Use this tab to learn how to play and some mechanics you need to know about before making your very own Moonlight Adventure. May the moonlight guide the way on our adventure.

Raid Adventures: Take your party on a dragon raid. Defeat the pilars, beat the dragon, win the raids. Note that some raids have special rules. Check out the Raid Adventures tab for more details

Story Episodes: Follow the story of selected characters based on the first story and how one decision to bring a rejected character into reality shaped the characters lives. Each episode is following the point of view of one or more of the characters. Dice rolls determine how the story plays, but there is no combat. Perfect for players who want 100% narrative and dice rolls. Timeline follows the time of Francis Thomson's death (before/after). Each episode has a PDF for you to play with for DMs.

Rules & Systems

Welcome to the rules and systems page. This is where you will learn how to take the characters from cannon into your own adventures on the table.

Welcome

Welcome to the rules and systems page. This is where you will learn how to take the characters from cannon into your own adventures on the table. Make sure to read everything because there are some specific rules to follow for characters, abilities, and more.

WHAT YOU NEED (PLAYERS/DM) :

  • Roleplaying Dice - 3 sets
  • Notebooks/paper for notes
  • Dry erase mats. DMs make their own dungeon layouts with the pillars and dragon
  • Rule books. Check downloads tab
  • Character stands or some type of holder (from the board game kits)

Raid Adventures: Beat the Dragon

Object of the Game: The object of the game (unless specified) is to beat the final dragon boss at the end of the pillar round. Each pillar defeated means a weaker final dragon. You win the raid by defeating the dragon. There are no death mechanics. Unconscious characters revive in 3 turns, unless a special mechanic allows otherwise. This is a combat game, but the DM can add narrations like normal.

RULES AND RESTRCTIONS

  • Allowed characters All characters including custom made mobians are allowed (except in selected raid styles)
  • Cannon Characters Cannon characters are allowed (except their parents. Parents will be allowed in Family Raid variants)
  • Luna the Wolf Luna the Wolf is allowed with the rule of she is friendly in most raids, except in Lunatic Mode, which has specialized rules.
  • Family Styled Raids 1 child, 1 parent, for a 4 player party (unless specified)
SPECIAL ADDED RULE DUE TO CANNON: Luna the Wolf's former parents are allowed due to rules, however in this mode, they are refered as Talavera. This is due to a cannon event where they remove the Talavera name
  • Themed Raids Follow the directions for themed raids in the "Raid Adventures" tab as each has a theme based on other things.

Story Episodes: Learn Through Dice

Learn the story of the game through the use of dice. Each roll, the DM will tell the story and the players try to play along. Imagination is key, but the dice shape your version of the story. Takes place during the first story before and after Francis Thomson dies.

  • Each episode features a character in the story and it tells the story from their point of view.
  • DM downloadables are there ready for you to play with. Board and other materials not required other than dice.
  • Players and the DM do not need to read the story to play as the dice will be used in a tabletop setting.

Create Your Mobian: Make Your Hero

Players are allowed to make their own customized hero on the Create Your Mobian tab. Players must follow the rules on that tab to make their own. Should they struggle, they can use the Cannon Characters. Please note the following hard rules.

  • Cyan Abilities: No Cyan Abilities allowed. These are only for Francis Thomson, Freya Thomson, and special cases for Freya Flower and Francis Clark. These characters are either born with them (Francis and Freya Thomson) or inherited through Francis Thomson's death (Francis Clark and Freya Flower).

    Special Exceptions:
Players can use Cyan Shield in two particular ways
Francis Thomson's Method: Shield the team 30 HP except for self
Freya Thomson's Method (characters younger than 11): Use the Cyan Shield as a damage absorber. Shield gets hit, character drained. No physical pain.

The character DOES NOT need to be related to Francis Thomson or Freya Thomson to play with the Cyan Shield, however, custom characters cannot play with Cyan (Rush, Rush Lite, Split, Swap,) or any special Francis and Freya Thomson abilities. They are locked for them only. Cyan Beam is also locked because this ability is only for Francis and Freya Thomson, Freya Flower, and Francis Clark through the legacy line exception and inheritance clause.
  • Talavera Surname: The Talavera surname (family name) in this context is allowed, however, players are NOT allowed to copy or mimic Luna the Wolf. In cannon, the Talavera surname was removed after the death of Francis Thomson. So a player can have the character named Orion Talavera, as long as said character does not copy Luna the Wolf
  • No Sonic characters or Sonic based cannon: Players are NOT allowed to make Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or any character from the sonic games or archie comics. In addition to that, no female characters based on Sonic characters (i.e: No Shadina, Tailsco, Silvia, or anyone in that nature.
CANNON EXCEPTION: Shadie the Hedgehog. She is NOT a fighter. She is merch disposal after Francis Thomson died. Cannot be drafted.
  • Disability Rules: Players are allowed to have characters with physical and vision disabilities, so long as the following rules are met:

    1) The disability is due to backstory and not copying Francis Thomson because its "cool"
    2) The disability is declared before hand before the campaign begins as disabilities have special rules to adapt
    3) The disability is not going to ruin mechanics of Nimble 5e in such a way the DM will need to adapt every turn
    4) Fainting mechanics are not disturbed. Special faint mechanics are applied to characters with a disability for adaptablity, not for mechanics
    5) The disability is considered as permament. Francis Thomson, Luna Tran, and several others are in this category
    6) "No Claws" Clause: Francis Thomson is born without claws on his hands and feet. Do not copy this. Honor him correctly

Combat System: Nimble 5e

Combat in this system uses the Nimble 5e system, modified to make it accessible for players who want fast combat and more narrative play. Here's what you need to know

  • Action Points — Characters have 3 action points to play with. Movement is 1 action, using an item is 1, and attacking is one action. Asking questions or strat talk does not cost an action.

Offense

  • Attacking (1AP)
    — There are no attack checks in Nimble 5e. You just roll the damage dice. Seriously! There are some rules though:
1 AP to attack each time. Your first attack is a straight roll. If you roll a one, you miss; if you roll max, you crit! For example, a d6 has a 1 and a 6. You miss on a 1, crit on a 6
Exploding Crits: On a crit on damage dice, you roll another damage dice of the same type, if you roll max again, you keep going until you do not. (example: 6+6+2 = 14). In this example, you deal 14 damage
Stacking Disadvantage: Should you roll again, you can, but you will now be stacking disadvantage. You roll an additional damage die, but you remove the higher number (example: 3d6 + X: 2,3,4 + 1 = 6). 4 is the highest, so you remove it.
Advantage: Should you have advantage on a roll for attack, you also add another die, but now removing the lowest. (example: 3d6 + 2 = 3,1,6 + 2 = 11). In this case, 1 was the lowest, and because 1 removed, you hit.
  • Item Use (1AP) — Using items costs one action point

Defense

  • Block/Dodge (1AP) — Blocking and dodging will cost 1 action point, but declare this during the enemy phase.
  • Interpose (1AP) — Take the attack for an ally. Will cost 1 AP, HP from attack. Declare on enemy phase

Assisted Fainting Protocol System (AFP)

All characters, regardless of disability or not, at 0 HP will faint. There are no death mechanics. Instead, a 3 turn faint penalty is applied, HOWEVER, all characters at 0 HP enter the Assisted Fainting Protocol (AFP). Characters must faint assisted, which means no sudden drops, collapses, or anything of that nature. The protocol triggers an automatic pause, this does not cause a loss of turn in the context of enemy phase. All fainting characters must abide by these rules based on disability, mobility device, or special cases:

  • Crutches (Example: Francis Thomson)
    - Impact can hit the character directly (above age 13), or hit the crutches (younger than 12)
    - The character must be supported down to the floor
    - The crutches must be placed nearby to allow for reach upon revival
    - The character is "checking" if his/her team is covered before closing their eyes and completing the faint
    - A lay back on back or stomach is ok as long as the character is not further harmed
    - Only then the faint is complete. Revival rules are similar just in reverse
  • Wheelchairs (example: Francis Talavera)
    - The wheelchair must be parked / brake enforced either by self or teammate
    - The impact MUST be the chair, not the character
    - The character must lay his / her head on the back headrest area and close eyes to finish the faint
    - Accessories like chains, necklaces, etc must be put away first by self or teammate. Feel free to make this your own way
  • Canes (Example: Suyapa the Cat)
    - The blind character must verbally communicate with teammates that she/he is about to faint (HP = 0)
    - Any teammate close by can assist in bringing the character down slowly and safety.
    - The cane must be placed close by to allow access for revival
    - The character must close eyes to complete the faint
    - Optional: Lay on back or stomach for flavor
  • Interpose faints with mobility devices
    - Crutches: Character must be supported by protected character safely
    - Wheelchair: Character must be supported via protected character with headrest rule
    - Cane: Character must be supported down with cane nearby and protected character unharmed
    - Cyan Shield via Freya Thomson method (thrown for protection): The protected character must be supporting fainting character
    - Optional: Lay on back or stomach for flavor
  • Special Case: Cyan Shield (Freya Thomson variant)
    - Players using the Freya Thomson variant of Cyan Shield must have the character's energy drained
    - The energy is not allowed to be redirected. This is a drain mechanic without destination method
    - The player can describe how energy leaves the character's body
    - The character cannot collapse violently. This must be a kneel first faint
    - The character lays flat on stomach, OR on their back, or to the side should the player wish
    - The faint is complete when the character closes his/her eyes
This is the fainting rule for minor characters (younger than 12)
